I was enjoying this book a lot but the last twenty pages really made it a great read. There is something so sincere and powerful about One Hundred Years of Solitude but it is difficult to explain in words. The dense writing can be difficult to navigate, especially since Marquez utilizes the stream of consciousness narrative style, and the names tend to confuse and perplex; however, the novel captures so many paradoxical fallacies associated with the human condition and it effectively analyzes them in an intriguing universe of magical realism. In summary, it was a great story but it took a while to read because of the writing style and the incredibly diverse and impressive vocabulary used (lucidity was Marquez's favourite buzz word throughout the whole novel by FAR).
4/5 Magical Monkeys.

I'm enjoying the twisted lives of the Buendia family and I love the magical realism that Marquez plays with. These people display a sad soap opera, complete with many self-destructive actions and prolonged periods of hardship. I particularly love how Marquez captures the innate flaws of the human psyche - it's incredibly engrossing. Looking forward to discussing this one later this month with Lit Club!
