Set in Australia, the novel captures what happens to good people when they may poor decisions. The protagonists of this story and the decision they decide to make affect others in a way that is almost viral, yet not over the top. The greatness of this novel is how it approaches some sensitive social issues and the concept of motherhood. It manages to flirt with the edge of the fantastic through a real-world setting. Its plot is flanked by hard questions and an emotional rollercoaster that exposes the character of morality and challenges our own concepts of what is "right" and what is "wrong". Built with beautiful, accessible writing, The Light Between Oceans succeeds in being an entertaining novel that lags only slightly in its development and progression of the plot after the halfway point until the last quarter of the novel. Overall, a nice read and recommended to those who have an affinity for novels that pull at the heartstrings and kick the grey boundaries of seemingly black and white moral dilemmas.
I have a new occupation in mind for my days of retirement: lighthouse keeper. Mind you, I'll also have to warp back in time to the 20's in order to experience the haunting beauty that Stedman writes about in The Light Between Oceans, her first novel.
