The Book Blog is a place that I will simply use to blog about my current reading "aha!" moments, challenges, feelings, off the cuff remarks, etc. I'll also post book reviews in this section and then archive them in the "Reviews" section as well. Please feel free to comment on any book blog you'd like to! :-)
First Book Blog: The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
REVIEW80 percent of this book drove me crazy and bored me to death. I was constantly complaining to Nette and David that I wouldn't be reading another Hemingway for at least eleven months. "Why don't they just hit each other or get into a fight?" Comments like this were constantly flying out of my big mouth throughout the entire novel - until the last ten pages, that is.
Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises is strangely haunting and powerful. The idea of being isolated despite having access to multiple material luxuries is something that I think affects people today more than ever. I was really moved by the message that this novel casually slips into your mind. Hemingway's style is neither fluffy nor didactic; rather, his prose is quite easy to navigate and the story is straightforward. The message is packed in between each word, easily missed because of its translucent quality but there nonetheless. In the end the reader can step back and view the text as a string of text that glows because of the shiny filler that connects each word. I was strangely satisfied with this book. The only downside was that I had to endure an initial period of hate toward the text before my opinion was flipped on its head.
